Ohana Cigars is the creation of Myself, Ryan Rodriguez, with the help and support of my father who is my investor as well as partner and stake holder in the company. I have been involved in some shape or form with cigars since I was 22. The first time I smoked a cigar, I found a new love, something that allowed me to sit, relax and as time went by, become part of what I now call family. Cigar smokers are a different breed, we can sit in a room, all walks of life with different political beliefs, different religions, and different personalities, but we have a common bond, cigars.
After several years in cigar retail I decided to become a representative for a few small cigar companies. This gave me a chance to learn how the “inner workings” of the industry worked. I was fascinated, and after a few years of this, I had a discussion with my father, who said “ Ryan I see how much you enjoy cigars, working in the cigar industry, why don’t you start your own cigar company?” I explained to him the costs involved, other concerns I had about starting my own company. After much thinking I decided why not? I feel like I have a good palate, and know cigars, so better to have tried, then not, and regretted or wondered “what could have been.”
The next thing I know we had made arrangements to visit several factories in Nicaragua and see what the best fit would be as well as see exactly how the whole process works. I was fascinated by the various small factories I went to, so few workers, very small operations, but not much choice in tobacco. The next day I visited one of the biggest factories in Nicaragua, I was blown away, never had I seen these many workers, that much tobacco, or that many cigars. I was excited, but I just didn’t have that feeling that I had any importance, or that any effort was going to be spent on me, when they had such huge clients. Finally I found Plasencia, who is the largest producer of tobacco in the world, with fields of tobacco in every region tobacco can be grown. They were very hospitable and I thought this was the best fit to start out. Ohana cigars has produced the 1st Generation, Friends and Family and M13 lines at this factory.
Fast forward 2 years, and I decided to go smaller, with all the big clients at Plasencia, I wanted a smaller more personable factory, I had met Noel Rojas about a year earlier and really liked the cigars he was producing. His cigars had a unique flavor profile, and construction of his cigars was second to none, nothing I could get from a huge factory worried about putting out mass quantities of various companie’s cigars. Nothing against them, they make some great cigars, I just fit in more with a factory that’s concerned about the quality and construction of cigars. As of today, working with him has been a blessing and my core line “Pulse” and “Pulse Maduro” have received several great reviews from various cigar reviewers, made top 25 cigars by Stogiepress in 2016.
These days we focus on the core line, as well as doing several smaller releases, or limited releases, including the anniversary cigar and a cigar done with Rahr brewery’s bourbon barrels used to make some of their barrel aged beers.
